How old is too old to neuter a dog?
Q. I have a 8 year old schnauzer who was never neutered. I am wondering if he is too old to be neutered. Would it be dangerous to neuter him since he is already 8 years old? I've always heard that it is best to neuter/spay dogs or cats when they are young.

A. In my opinion it is never too late to get a dog neutered. It can help prevent prostate issues. It would be a good idea to talk it over with your veterinarian. And since your dog is older, most vets would do bloodwork just to check his liver and kidney function. The bloodwork shows if he is healthy enough for anaesthesia. It is normally recommended that animals are fixed when they are young and that's because of hormones and also behaviors that they develop once reaching sexual maturity. Just like males can get aggressive once they start developing testosterone. So remove the source of the testosterone before it can affect the animal, and it potentially won't be aggresive. How much does it cost to neuter a cat?
Q. I have an appointment to neuter my male kitten. The vet quoted me $165 for the surgery $55 for blood screening and $41 for an IV catheter ( as an emergency precaution in case something goes wrong) This i my first cat but it seems like alot. In your experience is the a normal price or should I check with other vets?

Sounds a bit high to me...IV catheter really isn't necessary for a cat neuter. i would opt for the pre-op bloodwork...if your cat has a congenital kidney/liver defect or juvenile diabetes they cannot tell by looking at your cat with their eyes. The bloodwork will help them determine that your cat can metabolize the anesthesia with organs that are properly functioning. (Statistically though he is in a low-risk category). It sounds like they're giving really high quality care - the question is whether you want to pay for high quality care or if you are comfortable with higher risk and lower cost. A. that is something you wouldnt want to attempt at home..Its whey more complex than neutering a goat...You have to get the womb plus Overies out..I assist in Surgery all the time and a Dogs uteres can be as small as a spaghetti noodle.I would NEVER find it! The Vet has a hard time some days I dont think a goat would be much different
