Did you know that BASIC is not a backronym ?
Q. I was surprised today to find the website www.bitsavers.org/pdf /dartmouth/BASIC_Oct64.pd f which says that BASIC is beginner's all purpose symbolic instruction code. I had been "sure" it was a backronym.

A. BASIC is beginner's all purpose symbolic instruction code. Take the first letter from each of those words B = beginner's A = all purpose S = symbolic I = instruction C = code and you get BASIC thus the name of the programming language is an acronymn Most programming languages and computer ssystems are like this .. most people who work in the field do not pay much attention to this because over time the language evolves away from its roots, such that the basis of the acroynm is no longer a good representation of what the language can or cannot do..

What are some of the best ones you've seen? Or, make one up. Maybe you'll start something new. Hey Chef, the NASCAR one had me LMAO, but "No Family Life" for NFL couldn't be further from the truth. I happen to know a few NFL players personally, and their families, and I wouldn't say that at all.

It usually refers to a phrase that is constructed backwards from the phrase's abbreviation, the abbreviation being an initialism or acronym. Acronyms Condense Representations of Neologisms You Memorize In this example, because the word acronym itself is not an acronym, the phrase above is a pure backronym, not a replacement backronym. Since the phrase indirectly refers to the word itself, it is also apronymic. Also, because the word acronym itself appears in its backronym, the phrase is also a recursive-backronym. If this backronym helps you remember the word acronym or backronym, then it is also a mnemonic.
