How do I find the amount of energy necessary to push water into a pipe in the presence of backpressure?
Q. To preface, I am not an engineer:). I am trying to figure out a formula that I can use to find the amount of energy (in HP or Watts) that is necessary to push a given amount(flow) of water at a given PSI into a water pipe that is already pressurized. I would like a formula because I think that the amount of pressure in the receiving pipe will change from time to time. I am already familiar with the pressure loss equations, and the energy equations for moving water, but it seems that none of them consider the problem in the face of pack pressure. Any adivce would be greatly appreciated.

A. You must add this pressure as a system pressure. If you need 5 PSI to flow 10 GPM, and the system pressure is 20 PSI, you would then need 25 PSI to acheive your flow.
