Should I tip a furnace technician when the work is complete?
Q. Do you normally tip a technician/contractor who comes out to fix your furnace? If the cost of the repair is about 100 bucks, if you do tip, how much would you tip? Is it even necessary?
Asked by Nina - Sun Jan 25 17:57:38 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No it's not necessary to tip - they are getting paid by the hour or by the job, they are not providing an extra service for you.

How much should you tip a waitress when you place a to go order at a restaurant?
Q. I always tip them something, but my friend said I shouldn't tip them anything. What do you do? Should you tip them the same amount you tip someone that brings your food out to you, and refills your drinks, and asks if you need anything every 10 minutes?

A. I am a waitress at Ruby Tuesdays in Michigan and tipping waitresses when they get your to-go orders is a very good thing to do. You may not feel that a tip is necessary because your taking your food home with you but we as waitresses still took the time to pack all your food up and get you the condiments to go along with your food. Also had to make sure everything was cooked properly before packing it so you have the same good experience you would have in the restaurant at home. Not to mention, not getting tipped on a to-go order does affect your percentages in the evening when we cash out with our managers. If we receive a 0% or even only a 12% tip, it goes into our rating. Making it look like we aren't doing our job properly, when you… [cont.]

How much should we tip whilst on Holiday in California?
Q. My wife and I are going on a trip touring around California and Las Vegas I am hoping to obtain some advice on tipping so that we can be suitably prepared. I have already found questions and answers here which refer to us Brits as lousy tippers, what should we know about tipping so as not to cause offence? What is the best way to judge without tipping too little or too much? I expect meals are fairly easy to tip as a percentage of the bill but what about hotel staff like porters, parking valets and bar tenders? When tipping a valet do you give the tip when you drop-off the car, when you collect it or both? This is to be the first time we are are driving in the US too, so is tipping expected at petrol stations and again to what… [cont.]

A. Petrol, ie gas stations, will for the most part, be self-service. We don't tip store clerks. If you per chance have a service station with a "full-service" island and a "self-service" island, it's very nice to tip a buck if they wash the glass and check the oil after you paid your bill. At the minimum, tip 10% for so-so service at a restaurant. If it is terribly, terribly bad, leave a message by leaving 5 cents on the table as you walk out. Wait staff at a restaurant works for less than minimum guaranteed salary. 20% is the usual offering and round up the bill. If it is $10.50, leave the 50 cents plus the $2 and they will think you're about right. If you pay by credit card, tell the wait person you will be paying at the cash register. It's [cont.]

How much should you tip when you do curbside takeout?
Q. How much should you tip when you do curbside takeout at places like Outback or TGIFridays? Should you tip at all? Is it okay to give less than 15%? Do the curbside specialists get paid more than regular servers to cover tips they don't receive?

A. Whenever doing curbside pick-up at Outback, I always give $1 or $2. It's an easy coupla bucks for just having to walk a bag of food 10-15 feet.

Should I tip a bartender for selling me a beer in a busy nightclub?
Q. I attend a busy nightclub every thursday. Beers are four dollars, I pay cash, and it takes them two seconds to uncap it. I know bartenders make minimum wage, but these bartenders make hundreds in tips in four hours of work. Should I still tip them when I know they do much more than compensate for a minimum hourly wage?

How much does everyone tip for good service?
Q. I tip 18 to 20% for good service and personally I think anyone who tips less than 15% should think about how hard a server works and those who don't tip shouldn't go out to eat at all.

It makes our job worthwhile, not b/c we are so much getting the money but b/c of the respect and appreciation that you give us. Thank you for doing to others as you want others to do to you. Some of us work very hard at our job and really do want to give you an amazing time and relaxing experience.

How much do you tip your pizza delivery guy, and how long does it take for you to get your pizza?
Q. I always tip well - usually no less than $5, and I am always told by my pizza place that they'll have my pizza to me in 30-40 minutes. My buddy who lives nearby tips a buck or two at best and he's always told it will between 45 minutes and an hour when he calls. Coincidence? Or do the pizza places keep track of tipping? What's been your experience?

How much should you tip a hair dresser?
Q. I know they don't depend on their tips to get paid like a waitress does. Is there a certain percentage that's expected? Having no idea, I probably over-tip to compensate. Stingy "you don't have to tip anyone" people need not answer!
Asked by Wiiildflowers4Jade - Sun May 17 21:45:12 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hair Dressers do depend on their tips though, maybe not as much as a waitress but they still only make maybe min. wage so it is a hugge help! I usually go with about 20- 30% depending on how well the service was and how long it took. You can ever do more sometimes if they did an amazing job.

Asked by Nezz - Sun Aug 26 15:11:18 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Normally, the tips is around 15-20%, it all depends, it is because she receives tips around at that range anyway, Sometimes you may have bad one, if you tip about 15%, she shouts at you and said," you need to put more tips!" I brought 6 friends in a very fancy restaurants and my treat, it was around $250.- I gave closed to 20%, not quite 20% , it is because I rounded up to dollars, which is good tips if that bill is big... she shouted and asked for more... It is very bad attitude of her... I did not give her anymore... For lunch, I think it is very good... I would say if you like her, you can give her more to give her attention, for coming there more often, otherwise, it is less than 20% ... You did the right thing. YEAH!!

How much do you tip the super when you move into a Manhattan apartment?
Q. I'm moving into a Manhattan apartment (not a doorman building), and was told that I need to tip the super when I move in. There will be 4-5 smallish renovations that will be made before I move in. But do I need to tip him now, or should I hold off until Christmas? Or is this all about setting up goodwill?

How much do you tip a valet and how often?
Q. I've been staying in a hotel for the last 2 months. I have to use thier valet everyday, and to be honest with you, i'm a little tired of tipping. (I'm not cheap...but) Its a hassle for me. I'm from the new era where we no longer use cash...So in order to tip the valet at my hotel I have to go to the atm (pay $3) and withdrawl money, then I have to get that money in ones...I notice that people tip when they drop off and pick up their car...so I do about $4-$6 a day in tipping. My question is...how often do I tip? How much do I tip? Would it be wrong if I just wait until my departure and just give each $10-15? This really frustrates me...so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A. When i park in a garage i tip $1-2 when they return my car to me. If i want them to park it close or something special, i tip before and after, usually $5 before, $1-2 after. If you are there everyday, i certainly dont think tipping before is necessary and if they know you (if you pay a monthly rate) im sure you can just add gratituity onto that bill

How much do you tip your server if you have good service?
Q. I am a server at a family restaurant, and I have seen it all. I treat every table the same as it is my job to do so, but I seem to come across people that don't tip at all at least once a week. Obviously, I won't do this forever, but I was just wondering what the general public uses as their basis for tipping?

A. 20%. New York- Long Island area. twice tip rounded up to the next dollar- never any change- if not as great. Been a diner waitress through college, and a banquet waitress. Been a bartender. Got better tips when i learned my job, though, I gotta say! Twice tax went to fivers guaranteed in the smoking section- and the money was worth more then, so it was a compliment. Good luck.

What do you normally tip the owner of a hair salon?
Q. The owner does my hair. I read somewhere that it's not proper to tip the owner, but I'd feel bad NOT tipping. Wondering what everyone else thinks? Intelligent answers from those old enough to pay for their own salon visits, please. Thanks! Yes, I normally tip 20%. Unless I hate it, then it would be a bit less. For some reason I was under the impression it was tacky to tip the owner of the salon as they get all the $$ anyway. Maybe I heard it in a dream...lol Thanks to all for their answers so far!
Asked by deaddolly - Tue Jan 20 11:04:49 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I use 20% for non salon owners when they do a great job, 15% when they do a mediocre job, and 10% minimum unless they totally ruin my hair. For salon owners, it depends on what they charge in the first place. I had a great guy for a while, but his charges were so high, I felt 15% was sufficient. I found I could no longer afford him, so I now use someone who is wonderful, but charges much less and I like to tip her 20% or more because she is so accommodating (and also a great friend). If you have the funds, and you appreciate whoever helps you look great, no one should ever be insulted with a tip, especially during these economic times.

What is the proper tip to give to a dog groomer?
Q. I take my dog to be groomed every six weeks. He is a Standard Poodle. For a $48.00 groom, I've given the groomer $54.00, a six dollar tip. Now, I am changing groomers. Is my tip in line, or should I be giving more?
Asked by Sharon L - Sun Jun 24 22:28:21 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm a groomer, and really, I think tips depend more on the dog than the price of the groom. Depending on how you have your dog groomed, a Standard can be a LOT of work for a groomer. Unless you get a total shavedown, I would think 8-10 dollars would be more appropriate. If you get a clip that has a lot of long hair or hand scissoring (lamb cuts, show cuts, full coated puppy cuts, etc.) it might even be more than 10. Of course, you can also adjust the tip depending on whether you keep the same groomer for a while or change frequently, and how good a job they do. If you have a new regular groomer who does an awesome job, take that into consideration. Also, if you have a rude or substandard groomer, don't feel that you have to tip quite… [cont.]

Is it customary to tip a stylist after a free consultation on japanese hair straightening?
Q. I am scheduled for a free consultation to see whether the japanese hair straightening method can be done on my hair. This includes the strand test. I'm not sure how long it will take but it would probably be around 10-15 mins. Should I tip the stylist after the consultation? I don't know the norm for this, as this is my first time to get the procedure. And I don't want to upset the stylist if it is indeed customary to give a tip after the consultation.
Asked by jenigirl - Tue Apr 8 13:39:03 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you're doing this in Japan, no, there is no tipping in Japan ever for anything. If you are in a country that tips, it's up to you. If you tip at other free consultations, then do so but personally I would not. I tip when service has been done or someone has gone out of their way or have been overly helpful, not free consultations. Free consultations are for you to decide if you would like to use the business. If you like the consultation, schedule an appointment with that same stylist so you can tip them when they do the job.

A. I worked as a bartender in a banquet hall and what I did was when I started to have some business I would lay a dollar bill by my bar mat. The guests would see the dollar and most of them assumed that there were suppose to tip me. I never put a tip jat out but I was still able to "bait" for tips. Always worked for me and I was wearing a tuxedo shirt... not showing my cleavage.

A. one side should be leather and sort of rounded. Thats the side that strikes the ball. The flat side is glued to the end of the stick. Make sure you clean the surfaces good so they will make good contact. Use a quality glue and take your time. It will be worth it.
