A. You must practice by reading out loud to someone who knows when to correct you. If that is not possible listen to tapes and repeat proper english passages. Best of luck.

What is the difference between business english and literary english?
Q. The simple answer is, business English is formal. In other words, proper grammar and excellent spelling are essential in these communiques. Literary English is written for the audience (the readers) and can include the use of slang etc. In other words, literary English is written the way people (the characters or audience) talk in normal day to day conversation.

A. My lecturer warned me about my 'flowery english' in my Strategic Management term paper. I used big words like 'treacherous' instead of 'false' and thought that my paper might be inspiring. I then learn that business english - simply put is to express, not impress. =)

What interesting english short novel is good to write a literary analysis essay on?
Q. Hi English experts, I haven't read many books and am planning to do an english essay. I've chosen some themes but cannot find good books. I'm just looking for a good short novel (100-200 pages). This book should have literary criticism written about it and should be wellknown as a classic. I've looked at some books but they don't seem very fun to read. Finally, no dystopian fiction please. Thanks for the help.

A. The Yellow Wallpaper It's a short story, and you may have to read it a few times to fully understand it, but when you do, and you realize what different things mean, it's really creepy, and it'll have you thinking. It's written by one of those women who protested against the entire institution of marraige, so it about a married women who slowly goes insane. It might be exactly what your NOT looking for, but trust me, it's worth your time.

What is it called when english is used to express japanese pronunciation?
Q. Alright. This question came to me when I was watching the openings of some anime. The lyrics for the song are originally japanese, and there are 2 subtitles for this. The first subtitle is the direct english translation, and the second subtitle uses the english alphabet to express how to pronounce what is being sung in japanese. I was wondering what the second second is called. If it helps, I wouldn't be surprised if the same type of subtitles are used for english karaoke of japanese songs.

How did the English come up with the name Hungary for the country?
Q. I am Hungarian and I have always wondered especially because when the English chose names for countries, it was usually the name of the country, just with an English pronunciation. Hungary, in Hungary as well as some other countries (Turkey, Poland etc) refer to the country (or people) as Magyar. So how on earth did Hungary become the name of a country that's known in Europe as Magyar?
Asked by Peter - Sat May 22 20:35:15 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The word "Hungarian" is thought to be derived from the Bulgar-Turkic Onogur, possibly because the Magyars were neighbours (or confederates) of the Empire of the Onogurs in the sixth century, whose leading tribal union was called the "Onogurs" (meaning "ten tribes" or "ten arrows" in Old Turkic; see below). The "H-" prefix in many languages (Hungarians, Hongrois, Hungarus etc.) is a later addition. It was taken over from the name of the Huns, a semi-nomadic tribe that briefly lived in the area of present-day Hungary and, according to medieval legends, were the people from which the Magyars arose. The identification of the Hungarians with the Huns has often occurred in historiography and literature. Hun names like Attila and Reka have been… [cont.]

A. It was Henry VIII who broke away to the Church of England, after the Pope wouldn't grant him a divorce to his wife Catherine of Aragon. Catherine had only bore him one child a girl Mary, as England had just gone through a lengthy dynastic conflict (War of the Roses) Henry feared his lack of a male heir might jepardize his descendent's claim to the throne, when the Pope wouldn't give him his divorce, he decided to remove the church of England from the authority of Rome. In 1534 the Act of supremacy made Henry the Supreme head of the Church of England.

How to speak English perfectly and like a native English speaking person?
Q. I've been studying english for almost 15 years now. But I don't speak it very often. Ony in my English classes twice a weak. And my conversation skills are not as good as I want. I mean I can explain something in English but I want my speech to be more...you know...rich in adjectives and verbs. Can Anyone, please, give me a good site of the most generally used words by English-speaking people? Thanks

A. I would suggest watching Youtube videos. There are plenty of actual people talking and not just text. That way you can hear how words are used in a daily setting instead of just the classroom setting. Look up any topic and you'll find plenty of people talking about that topic. I hope this helps. Good Luck! :D

A. It is the lettter W. It even sounds like another letter. hint hint. alpha beta. alphabet. Greek. Those are the first two letters A and B. Even in Hebrew it is aleph, bet . And W looks like a double V not U. But I think that is because it was not in our original alphabet. The ancient Greeks did not have a U.

How to tell the difference between American and English english?
Q. I kinda can. But some british say they just need one word or two to realize. I think that's exaggeration. My friend said that english english sounds posh, cold, snobbish and sometimes they drag vowels. And they pronounce all the t's like t's. American english the people pronounces the ''r'' exaggeratedly and speak singing. And they speak through the nose. But it is always like this? What you think?
Asked by Neto - Wed May 5 14:28:29 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It really depends on the accent the British person has - like in America, you can tell which city, or at least which part of the country a person is from from their accent, they are that different. Some accents, particularly in South Wales (not New South Wales, that's the wrong place entirely), have quite a 'sing-song' accent. Others, as in the 'Queen's English' do have very posh, rather scary accents, which are quite clipped. They definitely pronounce their t's like t's =) For a good 'overview' of various accents, plus a few stereotypes, to be found on our lovely Isles, try this guy (sorry, I couldn't get a hyperlink, paste it into your searchbar)

How weird does an american english accent sound in another language?
Q. Like when russians speak english and they have a russian accent, it sounds pretty cool. Does an american english accent sound cool or stupid in other languages?
Asked by Greg - Mon May 31 12:05:15 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It can sound a bit inconsiderate sometimes. I mean, I wish Americans would actually TRY to pronounce things like they hear them. So "rio grande" as "rio grande" instead of "riou grandey". The most noticeable feature in American accents is the R. Most languages don't have an aggressive R like that, and no, the French or Spaniards don't pronounce it like that. The only language I could imagine an American to sound decent in is Dutch (similar way of pronouncing "ee" as "ej", and R like in American English). There's also the t, p, and k sounds, which Americans aspirate. in Russian and Spanish for example, the T is pronounced with the tongue more in the front, and without any kind of burst of air. It's an obvious giveaway, but unfortunately… [cont.]
