Neutering, from the Latin neuter (of neither sex), is the removal of an animal's reproductive organ, either all of it or a considerably large part. It is the most drastic surgical procedure with sterilizing purposes. The process is often used in reference to males whereas spaying is often reserved for females. Colloquially, both terms are often referred to as fixing. While technically called castration for males, in male horses, the process is referred to as gelding.

Neutering is the most common sterilizing method in animals. In the United States, most humane societies, animal shelters and rescue groups (not to mention numerous commercial entities) urge pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered to prevent the births of unwanted litters, contributing to the overpopulation of animals.

What are the pros and cons for neutering?
Q. We are thinking about neutering our dog because he humps out legs and he leaks all over. But we don't know the bad things about neutering. Please help! He is a puppy. Maybe about 6 months. When should we do it if we do?

A. Hi, Neutering sterilizes a male dog so he's incapable of parenting puppies. Many, many wonderful health and behavioral effects occur. It's a simple surgery, far more so than a spay. Under anesthesia, an incision is made in front of the scrotum, and then the testicles are removed through that incision. Here's more info:

How long should I wait before neutering a shelter dog that I am adopting?
Q. This sweet little guy needs grooming and neutering, but I want him to trust me. I want us to bond. I don't want him to get to know me as the lady that took away his manhood. As with grooming, I don't know if dogs like that or not and I don't want to inhibit our bonding that way, either. How long should I wait before I get him neutered and groomed? The balls are going away. Non-neutered dogs tend to roam and pee everywhere and are aggressive. Plus, I have to neuter him as a requirement to adopt him.

A. My dog was 8 mths old when I got him he was neutered 4 days later! The dog doesn't want to be dirty and has had a rough time in the shelter. All that barking and all those smells from there, most dogs don't like. I would take him to be groomed you don't know how the dog will react to grooming and the groomers are better equipped for a naughty dog. Relax, give him the SPA treatment and get him a new life. Dogs are happier without their manhood, it gets in the way alot! Roaming, marking, the instint for sex (they aren't high fiving afterwards you know!) are all done away with and you will have a sweeter more loving pooch!

I am looking to get a second agility dog.Do you think neutering a male Aussie would kill his drive for agility
Q. I am looking to get a second agility dog. Do you think neutering a male Aussie would kill his drive for agility? I am trying to decide if I want to get a male or female pup. thanks!

A. 1. I compete in agility. My male is neutered. I know many male dogs that are neutered. No, it doesn't hurt drive. 2. The things that have the most impact on drive are: --the dog's temperament (some love agility, are competitive, others just aren't--regardless of the breed). --how you train the dog (you can increase drive in any dog--or decrease it based on how you train it). --your skill as a handler (late cues, lots of corrections and drive suffers). 3. My personal advice is to get a male dog. Here's why: no agility trials allow females in heat to compete. Males don't have that problem.
