Can a restaurant quality stove be legally and/or safely used within a home kitchen?
Q. I've heard that the lack of a heat shield in restaurant stoves may keep them from being covered by home owner's insurance. How do restaurants work with the lack of heat shield issue? Thanks!

A. To use a restaurant oven in home -you must have firewalls surrounding it along with professional venting system overhead -restaurant kitchens are extremely hot -the ovens throw off intense heat -they aren't insulated like home ovens although many professional vendors do make insulated versions for home use now -I'd go that way for safety & comforts sake !

What restaurant or fast food place has the best jalapeno poppers?
Q. There is a place that I love, it is inside of a gas station that serves "Krispy Krunchy Chicken", but they aren't always open or don't always have them. And I just wanted to know where else they have them, so if I send someone out or go to a restaurant I will know which ones to get and which to pass, because once you've had a good one, ya don't want a bad one.

What type of restaurant would you need a resume?
Q. I am looking to apply at possibly Olive Garden or Fridays. Do I need a resume? I know its not a high-end restaurant, but I live in a college town and the competition is high. If I write a resume, should I include how much in tips I made per night at the restaurant I worked at in high school and while I was in community college? I worked at a steak n shake and made really good tips. My friend said including this on a resume would show I was a good waitress.

What restaurant would you recommend in Silver Spring MD to reconnect with an old friend for lunch?
Q. Should be a little classy, not over priced, somewhat impressive, and not a chain restaurant. Thanks for any tips!

A. Crisfields is good if you like seafood (but not if you don't like seafood, haha... it's a seafood restaurant... you can get a steak there, but that would be like going to a steakhouse and ordering pasta...) Anyway, it's not "upscale" but it's pleasant, reasonably priced for what you get, and it's definitely not a chain... it's definitely a local place. So if you like seafood it's great.

How does a restaurant record sales tax on comped meals?
Q. Someone told me that when a restaurant comps items from your bill, that these items can be recorded as cash discounts so that no tax needs to be paid. I always thought that the restaurant had to pay tax on the cost of these items. Who is right?
Asked by S Bear - Tue Jul 22 18:18:05 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. State law generally governs this. Normally they would have to pay the sales tax on any goods purchased for the business and not sold. Arguably that would include meals given away without charge. Some states treat this as a "store coupon" and require that tax be collected/paid on the retail price before the discount.

What entitles a restaurant to charge a luxury tax on your food bill?
Q. I recently noticed on my bill at a nice local chain restaurant that the tax was 10% of the bill. I questioned the waitress about it since the state rate is 6% & she didn't seem to know anything about it. She questioned management & the answer was that is is a luxury tax. What do you have to do to qualify to charge such a tax? Are there requirements, or can any restaurant charge it?
Asked by dgirl77 - Tue Feb 13 11:39:03 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's not that the "can" charge it. They "must" charge it. The tax goes to the state. The restaurant doesn't get to keep it. Many states have different tax rates for "prepared" food so it is common to pay a higher sales tax rate at a restaurant than at a store. If you want to fall over, rent a car at an airport and look at the tax rate.

A. "bo nus / bo-n s/ Pronunciation Key Pronunciation[boh-nuhs] Pronunciation Key noun, plural -nus es. Bonus is not now, and hopefully never WILL be a verb. If you only recently got the job, you cannot expect your bonus to be particularly large. Most likely it will be nominal, perhaps half of your monthly salary or 5% of your annual salary. This should increase yearly assuming that your restaurant continues to be profitable. After 5 years you can reasonably expect a bonus equivalent to a couple of months salary, or roughly 20% of your annual salary. This will vary depending on the cash flow of your particular restaurant.

They actually got the Queensland Gold Plate award people's choice for Best restaurant in Brisbane. Also if you or your friend's birthday is near, and you go on your actual birthday, (and have ID) the birthday boy/girl eats for free, so you only pay for one person's meal. Can a restaurant owner or the managers take tip from the servers?
Q. I work in a mom and pop kind of restaurant and the owners make us tip the kitchen every night about 10%. Is that legal. They also work as host, hostess and servers sometimes, and then make us share the tips with them. I like to know if this is legal. If not what are the legal options do I have. I am only interested in legal comments related to laws and procedures.

A. Okay..I'm trying again. I asked my room mate who is in business herself, but its a gift business. it all depends on location, overhead and your menu. The first poster pointed this out. I also depends on exactly how many people you can serve..how busy your area will be. the prices of food differ from location to location. The best thing to do is find someone who is a small business planner. Check out locations, get a rental price, how much it would cost to set up the inside kitchen taking the lions share. And if I'm not mistaken, all waitress are paid minimal wage and what they pay taxes on is figured out with tips included..not what they actually get, but what the government says they should be getting. A. Your best option is to get light switches with adjustable brightness. Older customers might prefer a little brighter light so they can read the menus, while the younger customers might want dimmer lights to set a more romantic mood. In either case, I'd say you can't stick with one brightness setting, and must adjust as needed or if a customer makes a request.

Location is in suburbs of Detroit Michigan. our Menu options are Gyros, italian beefs, chicen wings, seafood, fries, etc. Things of that sort. Its more of an Order-to-go type restaurant.

A. Do the leg work!!! People love to think they are getting a deal. Marketing costs should be considered in your budget. You can look at public sources on what the major corporations use. There are different approaches, but when starting a Resturaunt you are going to want to POUND the name out there. I would start off, after opening with coupons. Pass them out yourself at first or hire a couple of kids to help you. Put them on every door and car in at least a 3 block radius. I am not familiar with detroit so, I am not sure how the city is set up, but Printing, and the % discount will go into your marketing budget.
